Betances Role in addressing the Opioid Epidemic

The opioid crisis continues to affect all ages, ethnicities, income levels and communities – including Puerto Rico. Thousands die each year from opioid overdoses, and the number is increasing.

Betances’s Team is working to respond to the crisis through the Control Substances Monitoring Program. We attack the crisis by focusing on establishing controls to detect, prevent and maintain effective measures against diversion of Controlled Substances, including identification and reporting of suspicious orders.

The Opioid Epidemic is a Major Public Health Crisis

Main Monitoring Areas

  • New Customer: To assess whether prospective customers dispense controlled substances for only legitimate medical purposes.
  • Existing Customer: To assess and detect patterns or trends in customer orders and dispensing activity that indicate the customer might be dispensing controlled substances for other than a legitimate medical purpose (“Red Flags”).
  • Orders: To detect patterns or trends in customer orders and dispensing activity.
